Zelenskyy Signals Willingness to Resign for Peace or NATO Entry

In a surprise declaration at a news conference in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would be prepared to resign from his position if it would bring peace to Ukraine or speed up the country’s NATO membership.

“If a threat to my resignation is what will stop this war, I am ready,” Zelenskyy said. “Or if such a resolution doing so would fully clear the way for Ukraine into NATO and in my current position standing in the way of that then maybe I am up for that.” In his comments he underscored the importance of the need to ensure the long-term security of Ukraine against the backdrop of the ongoing stand-off with Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s defiant stance follows renewed battles on Ukraine’s eastern front and a tense row with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had recently implied that Zelenskyy was partly responsible for the war, a claim has been widely labeled as misinformation. To that, Zelenskyy retorted that Trump was siding with Kremlin talking points and reminded that it was Russia’s all-out invasion in 2022 that served as the war’s actual trigger.

Ukrainian Leader also said global unity, especially from Western partners is necessary. “We want nothing but action, not just words,” he told NATO to speed up its assistance. His announcement to resign suggests how severe Ukraine’s security predicament is and could increase the round of diplomatic talks.

As the conflict persists, Zelenskyy’s proposal, however, looks like turning point, though how long will it lead to truly peace remains unclear.
