UN Report Highlights Human Rights Abuses Under Both Hasina and Interim Government

Human rights violations at a massive scale according to the report of UN Human Rights Office occurred across Bangladesh as the deposed Awami League government governed in July-August 2024. The report exposed the violence targeted against Hindu and native communities after Sheikh Hasina lost her government power as Prof. Mohammad Yunus led the transitional administration.

The investigators proved that the Awami League government led by Hasina used all security forces supported by political order to suppress political opposition. The reported security operation led to extensive violations such as inhumane detentions coupled with forced disappearances and unauthorized executions.

The removal of Hasina from power resulted in a sharp rise of mob violence throughout Bangladesh. The institution identified purposeful assaults directed at Hindu temples alongside both Muslim factions (Ahmadiya Muslims) and native groups who resided within the Chittagong Hill Tracts region. The events included severe attacks against homes through fire alongside acts of defilement towards religious places. According to the study violent groups committed retaliatory attacks on both police forces and Awami League officials together with minority groups in the country.

The government headed by Yunus received the report while giving it independent status as it deemed mob incidents resulted from various motives combined together including religious bigotry and political retaliation and regional disputes.

The human rights activists questioned the insufficient coverage of the report. Suhas Chakma from Rights and Risks Analysis Group asserted that a UN accountability investigation acted improperly by narrowing its probe timeframe to August 5-15, 2024 and the period of interim rule.

Both domestic and international actors demand increased justice and responsibility from Bangladesh after its recent political crisis.
