Ukraine Agrees to U.S.-Brokered 30-Day Ceasefire Amid Renewed Security Assistance

In a major step towards de-escalation, Ukraine has agreed to a US- suggested 30 day temporary ceasefire and Washington has therefore ended its pause of intelligence sharing and resumed security aid to Kyiv. The agreement was reached in capital of Saudi Arabia during high-level talks on the future of US-Ukrainian strategic partnership.

Ukraine said it was prepared to accept an immediate, week-long ceasefire offered by the United States, which can be prolonged by mutual agreement, according to a joint statement at talks. The US has said that Russian cooperation is necessary for any durable peace, but Moscow has not reacted to the offer.

This move comes as Washington and Kiev had been in diplomatic tension for weeks, following a firm exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February. The ceasefire agreement has also revived talks on economic cooperation, particularly the plans for the development of Ukraine’s essential mineral resources, a project previously banned due to hostility between U.S. and Ukraine before.

Meanwhile, ongoing hostilities persist. Russia announced it had shot down more than 330 Ukrainian drones in a launched assault, resulting in several deaths. The truce deal also includes human aid, prisoner swaps and return of Ukrainian kids taken in war.

As Ukraine and U.S. try to keep the peace in this tense truce, the world waits lest we forget about what Russia will do next and whether this ceasefire will turn out to be the starting point for a lasting solution.
