U.S. Ends Protections for Over 300,000 Venezuelans, Threatening Deportation and Work Permits

The U.S. government plans to terminate deportation protection for more than 300,000 Venezuelan immigrants who reside in the nation as stated by The New York Times. TPS protection expires in 60 days subject to the federal notice’s public release which takes away protections from 300,000 Venezuelans among the 600,000 beneficiaries.

TPS provides immediate benefits to people from countries experiencing economic breakdowns and political turmoil because it acts as their life-saving protection. The Trump administration approved a termination that puts vulnerable individuals at high risk for deportation and withdrawal of their employment authorization.

From the moment of his presidential inauguration on January 20 President Trump has striven to reduce immigration while dismantling the humanitarian programs that exceed his understanding of US legal intent. Federal courts blocked previous TPS protections terminations when the Trump administration tried to end them in his initial term.

The United States-Venezuelan relationship continues to worsen while this decision is announced. According to Trump on Saturday Venezuela showed willingness to bring back all unauthorized Venezuelan immigrants. The Venezuelan government refuses to provide statements about this issue.

The recent decision creates unpredictable circumstances for Venezuelan households throughout the country. A Venezuelan mother in Aurora, Colorado remains at constant anxiety because she anticipates Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may arrest her family although they possess proper immigration documentation.

The proposed policy could produce negative effects that would break down communities while tearing families apart. An immigration rights rep stated the decision represents a catastrophic outcome for Venezuelans who established themselves in this country.

Affected people who face the termination date worry about entering a period where their lives will be defined by uncertainty and lack of security.
