U.S. military carries out precision airstrike against ISIS stronghold in Puntland, Somalis on Saturday, March 29. The operation, conducted by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), killed ISIS-Somalia facilitators.
The strike came in support of African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) forces battling militant groups in the region, which include territory that is becoming increasingly controlled by ISIS, AFRICOM reported. Históricos iniciales dejan de confirmar la no existencia de víctimas civiles.
Although much smaller than the dominant Al-Qaeda-associated Al-Shabaab, ISIS-Somalia has been increasingly present in the area. The latest operation is the latest manifestation of a more extensive counterterrorism effort to erode the reach of jihadist groups operating in Somalia.
This airstrike is similar to an operation two days ago and comes after US strikes in February that apparently eliminated senior ISIS operatives in Puntland.
US continues to support Somali forces against extremist threats, reaffirming its commitment to stability of the region. AFRICOM reaffirmed its position of maintaining military pressure on terrorist groups who pose a threat to state and global security.
This latest move runs in line with Washington’s campaign to check ISIS peripherality in Africa and help the Somali government to combat terrorism.
