UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Yemen to put “utmost restraint and halt all military activities” following recent US airstrikes, his spokesman said on Sunday.
Further escalation hikes the risk of greater regional instability and perpetuates cycles of revenge, making the Yemen humanitarian situation worse, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
“Any other escalation has the potential to worsen regional tensions, fan back-and-forth retaliations that could further destabilise Yemen and the region, and poses serious risks to the already desperate humanitarian situation in the country,” underscored Dujarric.
The appeal follows the US carrying out a number of deadly attacks on locations controlled by the Houthi in Yemen. US to maintain ‘unrelenting’ military pressure on Houthis until attacks on Red Sea shipping stop.
Guterres expressed deep worry of the humanitarian consequences, urging all sides to put dialogue and de-escalation first to prevent further harming. Yemen is still considered as one of the global worst humanitarian crises, with millions needing support desperately because of ongoing conflict.
International observers fear wider regional conflict if the fighting continues. The U.N. has maintained the call for a political solution and latest peace talks to bring an end to the situation of long-term conflict.
The U.N. secretary-general’s appeal reflects the deepening worries about the crisis in the region and the humanitarian toll for the civilians of Yemen.
