A coordinated suicide bombing assault hit a military base in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Tuesday evening, killing as a result of at least 9 people and injuring 25 of them. The attack, that happened during the holy month of Ramadan, has been taken credit by the militant group Jaish Al-Fursan which is a faction of the Pakistani Taliban.
Two suicide bombers blew up their explosives close to the fence of the well-guarded military compound, security officials said. A group of five to six armed attackers, who came in the aftermath of the twin blasts, tried to enter the cantonment but were thereupon by security forces.
Eyewitnesses said there were scenes of chaos as plumes of smoke mushroomed over the base and intense firing could be heard. Near by homes and building were damaged severely with hospital officials confirming that four children were among those killed. “The force of the blasts destroyed several roofs, killing civilian,” said Muhammad Noman, a spokesman for Bannu District Hospital.
An investigation is underway while security forces are in the area securing it. This is the third attack on militants by Pakistan in the month of Ramadan, fueling fallen for the growing violence.
Bannu has been a repeated victim of militant attacks and previous suicide bombing have left heavy causalities. Security forces are on high alert as the country struggles with the persistent insurgency in the northwestern part of the country.
