Trump’s Tariff Tactics Yield Temporary Deals with Mexico and Canada, China Threat Looms

President Donald Trump reached temporary trade agreements with Mexico and Canada to put off his planned tariffs after these two nations strengthened their border security commitments. The current state of global trade remains uncertain because President Trump has not withdrawn his threat to impose 10% tariffs against China.

The Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed on Monday that Mexico would delay tariffs for 30 days as their National Guard rounded up 10000 forces to improve border protection. Canada agreed to wait 30 days before receiving $1.3 billion in funding alongside their commitment to create a “fentanyl czar.” position while stepping up border security. The government actions seek to solve drug trafficking problems which Trump considered essential for imposing tariffs.

The planned 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico from President Trump have caused American shoppers to worry about purchasing price increases. Fulfillment of all ongoing tariffs would minimize U.S. household buying power between $1,000 to $1,200 each year. Supporters of President Trump maintain the trade policy will ultimately improve country security together with fair trade practices.

GOP lawmakers show limited attention to the proposed trade policies and only Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has advocated for exceptions on essential Canadian potash which serves agricultural purposes. China has announced its plan towards seeking World Trade Organization intervention against the tariffs which threatens to heighten existing trade disputes.

Global leaders and U.S. allies must adapt to an unpredictable trade situation because Trump uses economic means for political gain to influence market responses.
