Iran will be hit with bombs, the U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened, as Tehran is urged not to refuse a peace deal amid escalating rows over its nuclear program.
In an NBC News interview with NBC News on Saturday, Trump said, “If they don’t make a deal, it will be bombing.” He also hinted to apply “secondary tariffs” as a further step to pressure Tehran.
The statement is an escalation from earlier comments in which he threatened that Iran will face “bad, bad things” if talks are unsuccessful. However, Trump did not say if a possible bombing campaign would be carried out only by U.S. forces, or in partnership with Israel.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar once told that there is a need for a “credible military option” to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Analysts say Iran may be just weeks from making a working nuclear warhead, although Tehran denies any such plans.
In 2018, Trump extricated the U.S. from the Iran nuclear accord and since then has followed a “max pressure” policy based on sanctions and military force. After penning a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader inviting new talks, Tehran flatly declined direct negotiations and instead chose to answer through proxy such as Oman.
Peacekeeping efforts having hit a snag, the danger of military conflict is getting closer, causing worries about a wider conflict in the region.
