Trump Sparks Controversy With Election Overhaul; Democrats Mount Legal Challenge

US President Donald Trump has sparked a major political row by issuing a presidential decree to radically overhauling the US electoral system. The action, which has been met with an IMMEDIATE lawsuit from the Democratic Party, has also sparked talk of Trump’s plans for an UNPRECEDENTED run for a third time in office.

The executive order, called Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections, was widely reported to have taken effect on March 25. It incorporates more stringent voter registration mandates, where proof of American citizenship is required and restricts the counting of late-arriving mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day. Trump has backed these moves, claiming them as needed to prevent what he believes to be “massive election corruption”.

But Democrats have denounced the action as unconstitutional, asking a federal court to put a temporary hold on the move, through a lawsuit. President does not have authority to unilaterally change election law: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer The Democratic National Committee argues that the new measures could disenfranchise millions of voters.

Adding to the controversy, Trump has openly floated the idea of a third term as president, telling NBC News, “No, I’m not joking.” However, amending the 22nd Amendment, which restricts presidents to two terms, would only be done so by overcoming considerable legislative obstacles.

The U.S. holds its breath for a potentially defining moment in the future of American democracy.
