The presidents of the United States and Russia agreed through diplomatic channels to start negotiations which would conclude the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine. A discussion between Trump and Putin proceeded through a telephone conversation to talk about the Ukrainian war and possibilities for shared diplomatic work. Through social media Trump disclosed “We want to stop the millions of deaths that occur in the Russia/Ukraine War.”
The White House officials remain silent regarding Ukraine’s participation status in diplomatic relations between the United States and Russia. The Kremlin officially verified that Putin asked Trump to go to Moscow to conduct talks regarding Ukraine and various other bilateral matters. The meeting represents their initial serious discussion since Putin spoke with Joe Biden only few days before Russia undertook its Ukraine invasion in February 2022.
At the same time of Putin calling Biden the United States completed a prisoner swap with Russia to get American schoolteacher Marc Fogel released from Russian custody in exchange for Russian convicted fraudster Alexander Vinnik. Trump declared that Fogel’s return signified the start of conditions which could possibly lead to ending the ongoing conflict.
The Kremlin showed conservative skepticism about the agreement as a means to promote trust between nations though they approved of its existence. However, there is no public information regarding proposed peace agreements. The negotiation skills Trump is famous for have led him to express numerous times his wish for resolving the ongoing conflict yet no confirmed details exist about this proposed summit.
