A tragic accident tragically hit Trujillo, Peru, on Saturday as the roof of food court in Real Plaza Trujillo shopping mall fell, killing six people, and leaving at least 78 injured. The incident which comes to light on Friday night left the nation stunned.
Peru’s defense minister Walter Astudillo said five killed at scene, another died in hospital. Of the casualties, 30 have been released from hospital, while 48 remain, with three in a critical condition.
Emergency responders labored throughout the scene, using rescue canines to look for survivors. According to Luis Roncal, the head of local fire department that no more signals of life were observed but search efforts persist.
Police are investigating the cause of the disaster, which is believed to have been caused by weakness in the road’s iron roofing. People had described a sudden, thunderous crash, and then they fought for the safety.
As a result, Trujillo’s mayor, Mario Reyna, ordered the immediate closure of the shopping center for an “imminent risk.” He also said that review of other commercial buildings would be taken in order to avoid such tragedies.
Peru’s authorities have expressed their sympathy to the victim’s families and have promised an investigation. As rescue efforts continue, the nation feels another preventable tragedy.
