Tragedy struck at the heart of the city center of Germany’s meeting point of 300.000 inhabitants, Mannheim on Monday, when this car ran over people. The suspect has been arrested, and authorities advise residents to remain indoors.
The incident was reported at around 12:15 p.m. at Paradeplatz market square in full view of a large and rapid police response. As of late, police officials have declared that no specific motive had been established yet but said that it was a “life-threatening deployment situation.”
Emergency services attended the scene to treat the injured who police closed off the area to. The police in Mannheim published a public warning on the Katwarn app, recommending the population to prevent the city center. The app is largely deployed in Germany for emergency alerts, such as terrorist alerts and perilous weather warnings.
Mannheim, a city of 326 000 inhabitants is situated 85 km south of Frankfurt. The attack has stunned the local residents reminded of former assaults using vehicles in Germany. All possibilities, including whether there was extremist link of any sort, being looked at, authorities said.
Police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm would neither provide further details but ensured, that investigation is in progress.
