Three India nationals in Indonesians jail since July 2024 for allegedly transporting 106 kg of crystal meth with death penalty on cards after Indonesians prosecutors seek maximum punishment under country’s tough drug laws.
Raju Muthukumaran (38), Selvadurai Dinakaran (34) and Govindhasamy Vimalkandhan (45), all of Tamil Nadu, were intercepted on board the Singapore-flagged Legend Aquarius off the Pongkar waters near Karimun district. Acting on a tip-off, the Indonesia authorities intercepted the cargo ship wherein they found the massive drug seizure estimated worth of over ₹11,311 crore.
The trial has hit roadblocks and controversy. Captain of the ship, a key witness, did not turn up in person, instead joined via Zoom briefly, blocking Defence from cross examining. The defence says that under Indonesian law, the captain of ship is solely responsible for cargo, challenging prosecution claims.
Indian lawyer John Paul who is representing the accused has joined hands with Indonesian law firm Bambang Supriadi & Partners. Paul focused the defence’s plan to expose holes in the prosecution’s case. Retired Indonesian Navy officer Soleman B. Ponto testified in favor of the defence, stating that the captain was responsible.
“We have absolute faith that the original suspects are still on the loose,” said Defences lawyer, Yan Apridho.
The trial runs on with a verdict due on April 15 as murder defense lawyer tries to save the accused men from death sentence.
