Sudan’s Military Tightens Grip on Khartoum, Retakes Key Government Buildings

Sudan’s military has tightened its grip on Khartoum, seizing key government buildings after being one day ago accused of retaking the Republican Palace from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah said that army forces have taken control of the National Intelligence Service, Central Bank of Sudan, and Corinthia Hotel. ” Hundreds of RSF fighters were killed while trying to leave the capital, ” said Abdullah.

The offensive represents a shift in the conflict that has been raging almost two years, as the military forces RSF fighters toward their western stronghold in Darfur. Volker Perthes, ex-envoy general de ONU para Sudão, considerou a ofensiva uma “/terms generalista military e política para o exército”.

A drone strike on the Republican Palace—a construction linked to IS, apparently by RSF—killed two journalists and a military media officer on Friday, further inflaming tensions.

RSF have controlled several strategic points since April 2023, including Khartoum International Airport that is still under paramilitary control. Social media footage apparently showed soldiers advancing towards the airport, suggesting the military’s potential next destination on Saturday.

The war that has been ongoing has left Sudan in shambles, with over 28,000 people dead and millions displaced. Hunger has struck the nation, and destitute families by necessity search for a living. The conflict has been accompanied by mass atrocities, including ethnic violence and crimes against humanity, mainly in Darfur, monitored by international watchdogs.

As the conflict escalates, Sudan’s very future is at stake, with no clear end to the violence.
