Sudan Files Case Against UAE at UN Court Over Genocide Allegations

The government of Sudan presents evidence at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against United Arab Emirates (UAE) because it supports the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) through financial and military backing thus breaking the Genocide Convention rules. Sudan claims that UAE backing of the Rapid Support Forces created conditions that led to genocide along with other mass atrocities against the Masalit ethnic people.

The UAE government considers these accusations as a baseless public relations move which the country will immediately challenge at court. The government of Sudan asks the court to establish immediate stopping measures protecting civilians from additional attacks.

Evidence collected by the Conflict Observatory demonstrates that arms supplied by UAE have reached RSF through military support from Chad. Under U.S. sanctions RSF leader Mohammad Hamdan Daglo Mousa and UAE-based RSF-connected businesses must stop their activities because they allegedly use gold smuggling to back RSF military operations.

People killed in the April 2023 war have reached 24,000 while more than 14 million people become refugees. The situation in the Tchad follows similar patterns to the Darfur genocide that occurred in the beginning of the 2000s through Janjaweed militia executions.

The UAE’s call for an urgent ceasefire comes into question because its supposed involvement in the conflict potentially affects its leadership position in the region. The decisions issued by ICJ take many years to achieve legal enforceability.
