Serbian Parliament Erupts in Chaos as Lawmakers Clash; Smoke Bombs and Flares Thrown

Serbia’s parliament was brought to chaos on Tuesday when savage squabbles between lawmakers spilled over into violence, which left at least three people injured, one seriously. The raucous session saw flares, smoke bombs, eggs and water bottles being thrown across the Assembly hall, disrupting business.

The trouble broke out in the course of a planned vote of additional higher education funding, which the dissident lawmakers with hostility responded to, should the entrance of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević be officially endorsed first. Chanting and whistling soon turned into scattered fights, opposition folks out with “Serbia awakes and the regime falls!” banner.

Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic accused the opposition of being a “terrorist gang”. She stated that three legislators were hurt, with one of them in critical condition.

This shocking act of violence reflects Serbia’s deepening political crisis –the result of mass anti-corruption protests. Vucevic had quit in January after public anger over deadly collapse of a concrete canopy in northern Serbia that killed 15 people. Blame the incident on corrupt system.

Even though he resigned, Parliament has to formally back his departure, prompting opposition parties to doubt the legality of anything that the government passes from now on. With tensions reaching a boiling point, Serbia’s political scene is more unstable than ever, worrying over the country’s stability.
