Serbia Erupts in Protest: Students March 80 km to Demand Justice for Novi Sad Tragedy

Thousands of citizens accompanied hundreds of Serbian students in marching from Belgrade to Novi Sad on January 31, 2025. Their protest targeted corruption linked to the fatal train station collapse that killed 15 people three months ago. Rioting students who brought wreaths with deceased names received celebratory cheers and launched fireworks and laid red carpets during their Novi Sad entry as they prepare to block Danube River bridge crossings throughout the weekend.

People took to the streets to seek accountability and demand an end to infrastructure project corruption which started after the November 1, 2024 railway station canopy collapse. The building collapse tragedy serves as a catalyst for opposition against Serbia’s populist president Aleksandar Vucic because people blame the failure on corruption and weak oversight practices.

A driver deliberately launched their car into Belgrade’s peaceful protest which led to injuries of two doctor members. The violent incident represented the third attack against demonstrators during a period of a few weeks. Many protesters consistently demonstrate commitment through this violent situation. The time for stopping is not now according to Dr. Elena Matkovic who served as a witness.

The protester movement succeeded in driving Prime Minister Milos Vucevic from office but continues to demand additional changes from the government. North Macedonia and Western Balkan people require backing from every demographic. Student Luka Arsenovic declared that the brighter future depends on public support because without it downfall is certain.

Serbia’s young population has ignited national determination to fight against corruption while pushing for transformative change because they face widespread public anger across the country.
