Selena Gomez delivered a powerful reply to Sam Parker’s Twitter suggestions to deport her following her advocacy for undocumented immigrant rights. Following Gomez’s removal of an Instagram video showing her distress regarding President Trump’s immigration raids the public sparked intense criticism.
As her paternal family came from Mexico Gomez became emotional while discussing deportations stating “My people are getting attacked.” The emotional appeal Gomez expressed garnered audience support yet drew sharp criticism notably from Parker who pursued a former U.S. Senate campaign in Utah. In his criticism Gomez faced blaming charges about prioritizing undocumented immigrants ahead of Americans while he also mocked her status as a “descendant” who came from Mexico illegally through border crossings. Parker signed off with his request for American immigration officials to send Selena Gomez back to Mexico.
Gomez swiftly responded, posting on Instagram: “Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. She posted “Oh Mr. Parker Mr. Parker Thanks for the laugh and the threat” on Instagram before removing it. The online attack directed at Gomez received support from her defenders especially across media platforms as TV figure Geraldo Rivera highlighted Gomez’s compassionate leadership about these issues.
As a producer for Netflix’s “Living Undocumented” documentary series Gomez actively speaks up for immigration reform. Gomez used this series to show how undocumented immigration personally affects her relatives and why immigrants who lack official U.S. documentation need help the most.
