Unalakleet, a small community of approximately 690 residents, lies about 150 miles southeast of Nome and 395 miles northwest of Anchorage. Manpower from the Nome Volunteer Fire Department has started their search through ground operations between Nome and White Mountain yet they report that flying conditions remain extreme due to snow and limited visibility.

The department reported that weather conditions along with poor visibility restricts airborne search operations while demanding people to stay away from organizing individual search teams.

Officials from the National Guard together with Coast Guard members and state troopers continue their active search operations. The Federal Aviation Administration’s weather camera recording in the vicinity of Nome showed severe near-whiteout conditions that created problems for emergency rescue staff on Thursday. Nome serves as the destination point for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race since it stands right at the southern edge of the Arctic Circle. Teams are actively searching through challenging Alaskan winter conditions while working against the passing time.
