Rwanda-Backed Rebels Advance on Butembo as Conflict Intensifies in Eastern Congo

Rwandan-backed M23 rebels are now closing on a third major city in eastern Congo, inflaming alarm about the growing violence in minerals hotspots that feed global technology.

Rwandan-backed M23 rebels are now closing in on a third major city in eastern Congo as international anxiety mounts over rising number of people killed in remote areas rich in minerals crucial to the functioning of global technology.

On 16 June, the M23 attacked a number of Congolese army positions along the Butembo road — an 186 mile stretch that leads to a city of 150,000 around three futher north from Goma which they later seizeptomber.

It appears that the rebels have expanded their control both north and south of Goma where Bukavu, just near Burundi recently fell. The area is gold with coltan, a vital electronic parts mineral. It also seized Kamanyola, south of Bukavu -this could mean imminent attack on Uvira (strategic city).

Security Watch: The UN says M23 is fielding between 4000 and 5000 mostly Congolese but also former RCD-Goma rebels —still primarily Tutsi. U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk criticises armed group leaders to have killed children and shelling hospitals. At the same time, Uganda deployed forces to Bunia to suppress armed violence.

The U.K. Foreign Office summoned on Thursday the Rwandan ambassador, asking him to withdraw Rwandan troops amid mounting tensions in the Great Lakes. Rwanda has denied the accusations and has blamed Uganda for helping Hutu militias who were behind genocide.

An additional six million people have been displaced in the region where the humanitarian crisis is only expanding as the conflict further increases fears on instability of eastern Congo.
