In a major effort to intensify economic ties Russia and Myanmar have been signed memorandum of cooperation to promote speacial economic zone in Dawei, Myanmar, with the aim of building of port and oil refinery.
The agreement was signed between Russia’s Minister for Economy Development Maxim Reshetnikov and Myanmar’s Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Kan Zaw on a visit of the Russian delegation.
“This Memorandum contains the overall scheme of execution of a number of megaprojects of infrastructure and energy sectors of Myanmar, based on presentation of active participation of Russian companies,” said Reshetnikov. The planned schemes comprises of a port, a coal fired thermal plant and oil refinery. However, he admitted that oil refining is relevant complex of questions, economic feasibility is still controversial.
Dawei special economic zone under way along Thailand’s west coast. The deal seals Russia’s increasing foothold in Myanmar, particularly since Suu Kyi’s civilian government was overthrown in the 2021 military coup.
Besides of that agreement, both the nations are also in talks to cooperation about energy seldom, like gas pipeline to Yangon and perhaps a nuclear research reactor. While Myanmar is locked out of the West, it is Russia’s investment that’s shaping this country’s economy.
