Rage Erupts in Greece on Rail Disaster Anniversary: Mass Protests Shake the Nation

Thousands of demonstrators demonstrated through the streets of Greece on Friday, in a torrent of anger marking the second anniversary of the country’s devastating rail disaster. Protestors clashed with riot police in Athens, demanding justice over tragic train crash which left 57 dead. Riot police used tear gas, stun grenades and water cannons to push back crowds throwing gasoline bombs and stones.

Protests, which are part of a nationwide general strike, brought traffic services, including proposition, rail and ferry to a grinding halt. Government offices and businesses closed in solidarity to strike for justice, as labour unions demanded years of railway safety neglect to be brought out.

Tensions boomed near the Greek Parliament, police detained more than 120 protesters, 27 arrested. Con meanwhile, in the city of Thessaloniki, hoods demonstrators clashed with police, fuelling fears of more weeks of unrest. Families of the victims appealed for calm demonstrations, but emotions flared as outrage at government inaction spilled over.
