Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to visit India at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with diplomatic preparation currently underway, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday.
Speaking at a conference called “Russia and India: Towards New Bilateral Agenda” was held by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Lavrov stressed the expanding ties between the capital of Russia and the capital of India. He said, “Arrangements are on to have President Putin here.” However, the exact dates are not revealed.
Putin’s trip will be a key moment in the Russia-India relationship after Modi travelled to Russia in July 2024 — his first Russia visit in just under five years. Things at the global geopolitical level are becoming more complicated each day, but India continues to bolster its strategic ties with Russia in defence, energy, trade segments.
Lavrov pointed out that Russia continues to strengthen ties with countries like China, Iran and North Korea and considers India a major ally in Moscow’s foreign policy. The partnership between the two countries is commonly referred to as a ‘privileged strategic partnership’.
Discussions are expected to concentrate on such issues as economic investments, security cooperation and regional stability when Putin comes to Moscow, in line with anticipation. Observers say this visit will possibly cement India’s position as a significant geopolitical ally for Russia in changing global circumstances.
