A 7.1 magnetic vibration ejected high bound off the Pacific island nation of Tonga, affording a tsunami warning the sweep through ashore areas within 300 kilometers (185 miles) of the epicentre.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the 5 part earthquake is 100 kms (62 mls) northeast of Tonga’s capital city, Tongatapu, early yesterday (local time). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an immediate alert after sending out a warning that unsafe waves could affect neighboring coasts.
Authorities in Tonga are watching the situation closely but as of now, no reports of damage or injury have been confirmed. Given Tonga’s susceptibility to the powerful “Ring of Fire” seismic zone, earthquakes and tsunamis are a constant threat to the area.
Local residents and coastal communities have been told to remain vigilant and observe official safety advice. Currently, the tsunami warning evaluation is being attempted and further advisories will be provided once more information becomes available.
Tonga, a small island in the South Pacific and part of the Polynesian region, comprises of 171 islands and houses about 100,000 people. The country is stationed over 3,500 kilometers (2,000 miles) east of Australia.
As emergency workers size up the situation, worldwide agencies stand ready to respond if required. Furher Updates will come in the next hours.
Stay tuned for more developments.
