PM Modi Meets U.S. Intelligence Chief Ahead of High-Stakes Talks with Trump

The two-day Washington trip started when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held his first meeting with U.S. National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard. Strengthening counter-terrorism initiatives together with intelligence cooperation became the main topic during their meeting which demonstrated growing defense collaboration between both nations.

The current day will see Modi participating in his initial meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump since Trump secured the presidential office last month. The bilateral discussions will focus on resolving four major topics: trade, investment, energy and defense and immigration matters. Attending the talks with Donald Trump, Narendra Modi will pursue commitments from the United States to avoid trade sanctions against India.

A major trade agreement between both nations seems possible to finalize during Trump’s new presidential term through a process that faces likely trade disputes between the two countries according to former U.S. trade official Mark Linscott.

A joint press meeting between Modi and Trump will start at 5:10 PM ET (10:10 PM GMT) when the leaders detail their vision for the future of India-U.S. relations.

When Modi landed he received warm greetings from enthusiastic Indian immigrants in the United States who demonstrate his widespread popularity among overseas communities. The future direction of U.S.-India relations during the next years seems set to be defined by this visit due to its strategic and economic goals.
