A major counter-terrorism operation carried out by Pakistani security forces with drone strikes on militant hideouts in Katlang area of Mardan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa left 12 terrorists dead. The assault however also cost the lives of nine civilians and had the United States and Ecuador, among many others, transport swift condemnation and condemnations.
The provincial authorities confirmed early on Saturday morning the operation was carried out based on “specific intelligence” that armed insurgents were using the location as a transit point. The dead also included Mohsin Baqir a wanted so called militant with a bounty of PKR 7 million and and his deputy Abbas who had a reward of PKR 5 million on him.
Unfortunately, non-combatants, including women and children, were alleged to be within the periphery of the targeted zone. Irked by the murders, locals staged protests and later even blocked Mardan-Swat Motorway strained justice and accountability from authorities. The road was opened after discussions and deceased handed over for DNA sample.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur described the civilian deaths as “deeply regrettable incident”. The authorities have promised a full inquiry and compensation to the families of the victims.
Authorities reaffirmed their aim to fight against terrorism without jeopardizing the safety of civilians. “We will conduct our operations at the highest standards of professionalism,” a statement said, as authorities promised to examine what led to civilian losses.
