North Korea Reopens Borders for Kim Jong Il’s Birthday Celebrations, Offers Unique Tourist Experience

North Korea took the extreme step of permitting foreign tourism access for the first time since five years to celebrate the birthday ceremonies of late leader Kim Jong Il. Koryo Tours from Beijing operates tourism tours which will transport guests to Rason for a period spanning from February 12 to 18. The tour offers tourists access to the Sea Cucumber Breeding Farm and Paekhaksan Combined Foodstuff Processing Factory through a $720 package.

As a special economic zone Rason functions as a location where North Korea trials new economic policies because it serves as the first site to introduce mobile telephony along with a digital payment system. Visitors will be able to open North Korean bank accounts at the Golden Triangle Bank and can admire China and Russia views from the Three Countries Border Viewpoint.

North Korea has decided to reopen its borders to gain foreign money despite facing ongoing UN economic restrictions. Tourism activities in China generated approximately $175 million from Chinese visitors in the earlier 2019 period. The Chinese border checkpoint presents current difficulties for tourists attempting to pass through.
