The death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal at Odisha’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) has triggered protests and diplomatic moves.
PM K.P. Sharma Oli has announced that Nepal’s Delhi embassy has sent two officials to counsel students and provide accommodations. “Students can either stay in their hostel or go home,” he tweeted.
Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student, was found dead in her hostel on Sunday. Nepalese students are protesting at KIIT and outside Indian embassy in Kathmandu demanding an investigation.
Some Nepalese students were asked to leave the hostel. “We were told to go and dropped at the railway station despite exams on Feb 28,” a student at Cuttack railway station said.
Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba assures diplomatic efforts are underway. Nepalese Embassy in Delhi later said KIIT has agreed to provide accommodation and academic support to the affected students. Embassy is in touch with Indian govt and Odisha CM’s office.

Indian embassy has condoled the death and said an investigation is underway. “Nepali students in India are an integral part of our bilateral ties and we will ensure their well being,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s opposition student wing All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary has condemned KIIT’s handling of the issue and demanded stronger diplomatic intervention to protect Nepali students abroad.
