Namibia Mourns the Loss of Founding Father Sam Nujoma at 95

The nation of Namibia mourns its first President Sam Nujoma who died at the age of 95 and founded the country by fighting for independence. The well-respected leader of freedom who accomplished South African apartheid independence for Namibia in 1990 passed away on Saturday night after hospital treatment in Windhoek.

President Nangolo Mbumba celebrated Sam Nujoma as a “charismatic father figure” during his death announcement because the leader had steered Namibia through democracy and stability after colonial domination combined with violent independence fights. Nujoma held the presidential post for 15 years during which he made major contributions to heal and unify the country after its divisive post-war period.

Political history remembers Nujoma as a leader from a generation that fought colonial and white minority rule in Africa alongside famous figures such as Nelson Mandela and Kenneth Kaunda. Although known for being a Marxist and facing criticism regarding his Western hate speech and HIV and sexuality positions Nujoma received universal acknowledgment as a practical statesman in building the nation.

Through his policies he set two major accomplishments: a democratic Constitution and white businessman and political integration into the government while winning admiration from adversaries. Namibia values all that Nujoma accomplished throughout his existence as his work for freedom and unity solidified his place in their collective national history.
