Midair Collision Near Washington: Passenger Jet and Military Helicopter Crash Over Potomac

The midair collision between military helicopter Blackhawk and passenger jet near Ronald Reagan National Airport set off an extensive search-and-rescue mission across the Potomac River.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the collision happened at 9 p.m. EST when a Wichita Kansas regional jet struck a military helicopter before reaching the runway. Video footage from Kennedy Center observation cameras showed a fire erupted from the collision point.

The aviation official investigation is ongoing for potential casualties while airport operations remain disrupted through an order of complete ground stoppage. Multiple agencies operate helicopters while rescue operators employ inflatable boats to search for survivors who drifted into the George Washington Parkway’s river area.

A brief statement from American Airlines confirmed they are investigating reports of flight involvement in the event and pledged to provide additional information.

Aerial rescuers and a massive search effort bring to mind the 1982 Air Florida incident in which strong winds forced an airplane towards Potomac River resulting in 78 deaths.

Rescue staff maintain constant readiness during the ongoing investigation of the situation. More details are expected soon.
