Microsoft has unveiled its first commercial quantum computing chip, Majorana 1, a key point in its nearly two-decade-long research of quantum computing. The chip, which was launched on Wednesday, has eight topological qubits intended to demonstrate the maximum potential of quantum technology.
Unlike traditional computers that employ bits in either binary states, quantum computers utilize qubits, states that exist in multiple states at once and has the potential to exert immense computational power. Microsoft’s Majorana 1 uses topological qubits made from indium arsenide semiconductors, and aluminum supersconductors. A recent paper in Nature looks into its technological advances.
While competitors such as Google, IBM, IonQ and Rigetti Computing have also made gears in the direction of quantum computing, Microsoft is concentrating on long-term scalability.
