M23 Rebels Advance in DRC Amid Volunteer Uprising; Regional Crisis Deepens

The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group has recently launched a powerful attack in eastern DRC which resulted in their seizure of major areas within Goma while proceeding toward Bukavu. M23 rebels made a promise to pursue their way toward Kinshasa the national capital which has forced more than half a million people to leave their homes throughout this month.

The Congolese army defense received numerous volunteers who lined up in Kavumu while M23 rebels drew near the town which contained a core military airfield. According to an AFP interview with a local resident M23 fighters received powerful resistance from the population because everyone refused to be controlled by the rebels.

International bodies including the UN alongside the US and EU have jointly demanded that Rwanda would end its purported support for M23 rebels. The Rwandan government has declared that they do not participate in operations while they work to remove guerrillas linked to genocide. Regional governing authorities gathered at a session in Harare to take action on the worsening conflict that has resulted in six million fatalities during three decades.
