United Nations said, the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have kidnapped at least 130 men in two Goma eastern Congo hospitals who were sick and wounded. The assault, which occurred on February 28, has heightened concerns of the worsening conflict in the area.
M23 fighters stormed following Free CBCA Ndosho Hospital and Heal Africa Hospital, forcibly dragging away 116 patients of the former and 15 patients of the latter. The missing people were believed to be Congolese Army troops or Wazalendo militia, who support the government.
“It is very worrying that M23 are hijacking patients from hospital beds in planned raids,” Shamdasani said, calling for the rebels to release them straight away.
M23 rebels have been on the advance since the start of the year, taking key towns such as Goma and Bukavu. Their crusade has claimed the lives of some 3,000 people. Indicates that it is thought that around 4,000 Rwandan troops are fighting on behalf of rebels.
Rwanda denies hand in the fighting but says Congo is backing ethnic Hutu rebels with ties to the 1994 genocide. In the meantime, M23 says it is fighting the war to safeguard Tutsis and Congolese of Rwandan origin.
With tensions rising, analysts predict a worsening humanitarian crisis in the resource-rich area where civilians are caught in the middle-fire.
