Kentucky’s Devastation Deepens: Death Toll Climbs to 21 Amid Deadly Floods

Kentucky struggles to recover from disastrous flooding and freezing temperatures, after Governor Andy Beshear said Saturday that the death toll has increased to 21. The newest victim, a man of Logan County’s is the latest person to be confirmed to the grim number of people loses in one of the most disastrous natural disasters the state has suffered for years.

This is heartbreaking, Beshear posted to X. These are our fellow Kentuckians, folks, each one of which is a child of God taken too soon. Britainy and I are praying for their loved ones.”

The disaster, which broke out on February 15, has left hundreds of families homeless and some taking shelter in emergency camps. In the victims, there are persons that died of hypothermia, and at least one child, who drowned along with their mother as the vehicle of the latter was swept away by floods.

Kentucky is now waiting for more federal help, as President Biden declared a disaster in the state. Beshear has also applied for personal assistance through FEMA and still is asking people to donate to the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund, focusing on funeral costs and recovery.

The national weather service predicts a change to warmer and drier weather that provides a hint of relief. But, frustrated, nearly 660 residents are still without electricity, over 100 roads are blocked, and communities struggle for recovery.

“We’re all in this together,” Beshear scrambled. “Kentucky is resilient, we will recover.”
