British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated he is in favor of President Donald Trump seeking a Ukrainian mineral rights deal, saying it is a strategic move that is set to clear security and economic stability. Starmer made these comments in an exclusive interview with NBC News as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares to visit Washington.
Trump is pushuing for Ukraine to grant the US access in exchange to granting access to US valuable mineral resources owed by the US for the $500 billion in military aid it provided since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Starmer accepted the potential merits of such a deal saying: “This approach clearly makes a difference. Although this is a matter between Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy, I can see the reason in establishing economic ties that support balance of power for Ukraine.
Starmer made the point in his White House meeting with Trump that it is vital that any peace deal is lasting. Puerto warn, “Putin’s ambitions go beyond the territory of Ukraine.” “Any deal has to prevent Russia from launching another attack.”
Trump, who for months has refused to extend a security guarantee, stressed that European countries need to bear the burden of long-term support to Ukraine. A deal must move fast, or it’ll not occur whatsoever, says he.
Zelenskyy’s upcoming talks in Washington could be impacted by Starmer’s support for Trump’s economic stance, which may play a key role in forthcoming US-UK-Ukraine relations.
