Jet Set Nightmare: Death Toll Hits 248 as Lawsuits Mount in Dominican Club Collapse

The Dominican Republic is still reeling from the deadly roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub, which is an infamous nightclub, as the confirmed death toll has now reached 248, the Ministry of Interior and Police said.

The accident during a crowded Holy Week celebration on April 8th has generated national mourning and resulted in massive cancellations of Easter celebrations all over the nation. The Dominican Navy officially has prohibited beach parties, while local governments have cancelled all character of square and park functions.

Families of victims, such as the family of Virgilio Rafael Cruz have started putting together law suits against the club’s owners saying they where negligent of the buildings structure. Grief is about to transform into demands for accountability and legal actions are going to escalate.

Jet Set, a trendy oficina taken over by media mogul Antonio Espaillat, head of one of the country’s biggest broadcasting empires, is being investigated. Espaillat has openly promised to cooperate fully with law enforcement, but critics call for closer inspection.

The club is said to have had anywhere from 700 to 1,000 attendees that night of the collapse, but exact attendance is unclear. Rescue efforts have been called off on April 10, however the pain mentally still feels.

“Forensic examination will take around three months,” stated Leonardo Reyes, director of the national infrastructure safety bureau.

Also vigils outside the nightclub in Santo Domingo take place, people lighting candles and flowers in memorium of the victims.

This disaster has become one of the deadliest disasters in the Caribbean in recent times casting a heavy shadow over the country’s Holy Week.
