External Affairs minister S. Jaishankar said if Pakistan vacates Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Kashmir issue entirely get settle. At a London-based think tank, Chatham House, Jaishankar replied to a question about whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi could use his rapport with former U.S. President Donald Trump to resolve the matter.
“Article 370 was chapter one,” he said, alluding to the 2019 constitutional modification. “Step two was the creation of economic activity and the social justice delivered to the people of Kashmir. Step three was conducting elections with high participation. The final step is to get back stolen Kashmir, under Pakistan occupation in illegal manner. After that, Kashmir is finished” assurance of Kashmir is done.
The discussion also covered human rights issues in Jammu and Kashmir. Jaishankar rejected all-round condemnation saying that India had a very good human rights record. He conceded that grievances are there but said India is dealing with issues that ensure equal entitlement for all citizens.
The comments came as the UK’s House of Commons also held a debate on “Government support for human rights in Jammu and Kashmir” initiated by Labour MP Sarah Smith. Counter to suggestions of human rights abuses, Jaishankar said India had been subjected to geopolitically motivated crusades.
By and large, India’s position on PoK has been asserted once again in these comments, in which India reiterates its long-standing demand for PoK’s return as the pre-requisite to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
