Italy Probes China’s AI Giant DeepSeek Over Data Privacy Concerns

Italian Data protection authority Garante began an examination of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) model DeepSeek which requires full disclosure about personal data collection practices.

The data protection watchdog released a statement on Tuesday to request information about personal data collection from DeepSeek and its sources and legal framework for use together with an assessment of Chinese data storage. DeepSeek together with its affiliated entities must respond within twenty days. The regulatory action stands as a keystone step in addressing China’s rising artificial intelligence company.

DeepSeek earned attention from the tech industry when it outpaced OpenAI’s ChatGPT in U.S. Apple App Store download statistics by presenting itself as a budget-friendly version of ChatGPT.
