Israeli Drone Strikes Injure Two in South Lebanon Amid Fragile Ceasefire

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah flared on Wednesday as an Israeli drone killed two children on a vehicle in southern Lebanon, Lebanese state media said.

According to the National News Agency (NNA) the drone attack took place close to Ras Naqura, close to a Un peacekeeping post. The victims, pronounced as sibling scrap collectors, were injured and taken to the hospital.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack, saying it hit people accused of playing a role in ceasefire breaches. “Earlier this morning sight was seen loading arms onto vehicles in Naqoura of suspects. One of the vehicles was targeted by the Israeli Air Force in order to neutralize the threat,” the statement read.

The attack occurred a day after Israel shot dead a Hezbollah naval commander in the area, charging him with violating the truce. Thetruce, negotiated on November 27 and intended to bring an end to more than a year to violence, has been repeatedly challenged by continued Israeli actions against Lebanon.

Even when a ceasefire was in place, Israel retains military forces in five spots inside the territory of Lebanon, in contravention of a February 18 deadline for withdrawal. Additionally Hezbollah has yet to carry out the pullback required beyond the Litani River.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz revealed recently, Israeli forces was to stay permanently in what he described a “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon, further stressing regional stability.
