Israel has launched a “limited ground operation” in northern Gaza, targeting the key Netzarim corridor, bringing an end to a delicate two-month ceasefire with Hamas. Defense Minister Israel Katz threaten with more military operation if the hostages were not set free after 17 months.
The Israeli military said that it had retaken part of the corridor, which links northern and southern Gaza, that it had ceded when it withdrew under a January truce. Katz ordered additional evacuanatos and bombings of Hamas’s strongholds.
In the resumed offensive, a United Nations staff member was killed, and five others wounded when U.N. guest house in Deir al-Balah was hit. Jorge Moreira da Silva, chief of the U.N. Office for Project Services (UNOPS) confirmed the attack was intentional and dismissed the claims of an accident. Even though there was prior coordination with the Israeli military the compound was attacked on numerous occasions.
Yet, forty six hundred Units that could gather over Gaza is Unsafe… (estimated at 20 percent over room capacity.) Another 678 people have been wounded. Israel says its attacks aim at militants and blames Hamas for civilian casualties.
The downfall of the ceasefire rekindles worries of an extended conflict and diminishes previous attempts to arrive at a lasting peace deal. While Hamas insists on a total Israeli pullout, Israel is dedicated to disbanding the militant group.
Concern from the international community is rising as humanitarian situation worsens with no signs of conflicts de-escalating in the protracted crisis.
