Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of Iran rejected talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump during his Friday speech because dialogue with Trump did not align with reason or intelligence or honor. Khamenei addressed Iranian Air Force officers at Tehran and renewed his position that discussions with America would not fix Iran’s current situation.
Through Iranian news agency Tasnim he stated meetings with America cannot solve demanding issues.
The Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei made these statements following Trump’s declaration during Wednesday that he would reconsider the Iranian nuclear agreement. Trump launched his “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran with an executive order to halt its nuclear development and oil sales just before his proposed diplomatic overtures began.
Through his Truth Social post Trump stated “We don’t want to be tough on Iran but there’s no way we’ll sign an unverified Nuclear Peace Agreement since that lets Iran expect growth and prosperity.” We endorse The Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement because it permits Iran to achieve economic growth together with development.
Khamenei appealed to his past experiences when pointing out that the former agreements became unsuccessful because the United States did not abide by them. Khamenei condemned the White House’s withdrawal of the 2015 nuclear deal since Iran agreed to major concessions but received no benefits after the Trump administration cancelled sanctions in 2018.
Multiple international analysts struggle to interpret the exchanged messages between both parties about potential diplomatic talks. Darya Dolzikova from the Royal United Services Institute indicated that targeting Iranian shipments to China would intensify the pressure on Iran.
An enhanced Iran-Russian-Chinese relationship along with tightened U.S. sanctions creates unclear prospects for new U.S.-Iran diplomatic dialogue. Iran defends it does not seek nuclear weapons though it upholds its position as a signatory member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
