India Knew of Anti-Hasina Wave but Couldn’t Intervene, Says Jaishankar

India was awake of rising anti-Sheikh Hasina sentiments in Bangladesh ahead of her government’s ouster on August 5, 2024, but had no strength to douse it, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said at a parliamentary briefing on Saturday.

Dr. Jaishankar stated while addressing the Consultative Committee on External Affairs that India, as well as other key parties involved closely watched the developments as they unfolded. He cited U.N. Human Rights Chief Volker Turk’s earlier call to the Bangladesh army to avoid using force on unarmed protesters or risk undermining their peacekeeping roles.

India has kept contact with Bangladesh’s caretaker government technically ticking despite strained relations. It is believed that in December 2024 Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka, while speculation is there on whether next month in Bangkok Prime Minister Narendra Modi could meet Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on the eve of BIMSTEC summit.

Jaishankar also underscored China’s rising influence in the region pointing out that although China is a competitor not an adversary, growing relations with Bangladesh, including fresh aviation pacts, amid closely watched.

Regarding Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict, the minister (sic) talked with India’s readiness to respond to border security matters generated by the troubled situation.

Making a significant comment, Jaishankar said that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is “not off the table,” indicating possible revival of the long-dormant regional grouping.

The briefing highlighted India’s fine diplomatic juggling act in response to changing regional dynamics.
