India has said it will not be rushed into premature trade talks, even as the world environment changed around it. As India swapped statements during high-stakes talks with the United States, the country’s ongoing uncompromising stance got support from two politicians: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
Speaking at the Italy-India Business, Science and Technology Forum, Mr Goyal was reacting to former US President Donald Trump’s decision to “pause” tariffs for 90 days, seen as a move to push bilaterally towards a deal. But, Goyal insisted, “We do not negotiate at point of guns”. We place Indian intrest first & never take any decision under pressure on any agreement: President of India.
In another address at the Carnegie Global Technology Summit, Jaishankar echoed the remarks. ‘The world has changed now dramatically. US has gone in more aggressive way. Although we are ready for haste, we treat [every agreement with] on a level footing,” he said.
Jaishankar also explained how India was changing its perception of trade partners. This round, both see clearly through the other. The negotiations were unilateral” he said during reflections of past talks with the Trump administration.
Both ministers stressed that trade negotiations with the US, EU and others are going on, but mutual delicacy and national interest are non-negotiable. As India plots course for advancement to developed nation by 2047 then obvious that message is: New Delhi will match the talk but will never put price tag on his sovereignty.
