Greenland’s Premier Mute Bourup Egede has stated distinctly: “Greenland is ours.” His profic statement is referring to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements that America will “acquire” the Arctic island “one way or another.”
Egede wrote on Facebook on Wednesday, in both Greenlandic and Danish, saying Greenlanders are not American nor are they Danish but a people independent. He added that the fate of the island will be decided by the people of the island alone.
Trump, speaking to Congress on Tuesday, called out directly to Greenlanders with promises of security and riches under U.S. sovereignty. “We are in favor of your self-determination,” he said, while adding, “Together we will take Greenland to great new heights never before.” At the same time, he also suggested that a thrust would also be made to get the deal done, declaring, “For global security, we need Greenland. And we will get it – one way or another.”
His comments have been widely condemned by Greenlanders and their Danish friends. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen insisted again that Greenland is “not for sale,” and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized the need for the recommendation of Greenland’s next day’s parliamentary elections to be kept free from foreign pressures.
With growing tensions about U.S. intentions, the just approaching elections of Greenland take hold larger than ever. Many Greenlanders are thinking about full independence from Denmark, so Trump’s comments are a big issue in the campaign. The world looks on as Russia tries to keep its grip Calgary gateway to its vast northern territory.
