The longest U.S. dogfighting sentencing ever meted out went to a Georgia resident who received 93 dogfighting convictions and 10 counts of animal cruelty charges. Last week Vincent Lemark Burrell received a prison term of 475 years for his crimes after authorities found 107 mistreated dogs at his Dallas Georgia property in November 2022.
Amazon made the discovery when one of their delivery technicians observed dogs restrained with industrial logging chains on Burrell’s property. The subsequent search in this dog fighting location uncovered dreadful conditions which displayed a combination of severe malnutrition alongside the absence of food, water and suitable shelter among many dogs who displayed injuries from dog fights that included scars and tooth extractions. A part of the pup enclosure consisted of a basement that contained piles of urine and feces.
Authorities obtained evidence at the property with findings of dog treadmill machinery and dog breeding infstructures and dogfight break sticks for opening dog mouths. Evidence collected by prosecutors revealed Burrell maintained relationships with multiple dog fighters besides showing proof of dog medicine purchases and contract agreements for dogs.
The prosecutors believe Baby Shark who stood only eight weeks old at the time belonged to the breed program for illegal fighting. Baby Shark has matured into an adult dog representing the prevention of dog abuse that the case has achieved.
The court handed down the maximum legal penalty to Burrell under the direction of Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci who alerted about the serious nature of his offenses. The Friends of the Forlorn Animal Rescue organization received the dogs from their custody after they were rescued.
The defendant Burrell has refused to participate in dog fighting and has yet to announce his plans about an appeal. The defense attorney remains silent regarding the court case.
