Nepal’s former King Gyanendra Shah returned to Kathmandu yesterday, welcomed by a burst of pro-monarchy supporters calling for a restoration of the monarchy. Welcomed from Pokhara where he landed on board a Simrik Air helicopter, the 77-year-old ex-monarch was greeted to excited chants of “We need our king” and “Bring down the federal republic system.”
Hundred of royalist activists, leading figure of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, were seen holding national flags, carrying placards outside the Tribhuvan International Airport. many motorcycles followed the former king in a large procession to his private residence Nirmal Niwas under tight security cover.
The meet rayed suspicion that Gyanendra might try to step into the Narayanhity Palace Museum. But the rally remained calm, and the former king, continued to his residence without any problem.
Royalist sentiments have been rising in royal country in recent weeks-most after setting up Democracy Day earlier this year in February when Gyanendra called for national modernization and alluded judgement a greater session in the country’s further. Famous names such as Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala also made noise in support of the ex-monarch’s comeback
With increasing pleas for political change, Nepal’s leaders face fresh debates about the place of the monarchy within the country’s functions of government.
