EU Stands Firm Against U.S. Tariffs, Pledges Strong Response

The EU would be prepared to strike back via tariffs if necessary, against the proposed US tariffs on EU imports. Government Spokeswoman for France Sophie Primas of the European Union was quick to reaffirm the block’s dedication to fair trade saying the EU would not be left idle if need be.

A war of trade is in no one’s position, but the European Union will react, Primas said to BFM TV on Thursday. Her comments came a day after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on EU goods, a move which has further strained transatlantic relations.

Trump, in his statement on Wednesday stated that the EU “was set up to take advantage of countries, to use countries and abuse countries and it hasn’t worked out that way. Primas triched the complaint, reasserting that the EU is not created to coerce any nation but to further cooperation between the economics.

The European Commission backed up Primas’ words on this matter, big warning sounds of firm and swift countermeasures should the U.S. plans to go ahead with what it called “unfair trade barriers.”

As the relationship between the two partners deteriorates economically, European leaders are deliberating on what to do. Though the diplomatic routes stay open, analysts warn that if retaliatory tariffs emanate from Europa Union it takes risk for a trade war with far-reaching consequences.

With trade negotiations in a crunch phase now, the world is looking to Washington and Brussels to see if de-escalation or economic showdown will write the next chapter in the US-EU relationship.
