Myanmar is still trying to cope with the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit on Friday, killing at least 1,644 people and leaving thousands more injured. Rescue operations have been intensified as aftershocks hit Mandalay and other affected areas. Residents, who are still trapped under the rubble, are desperately hoping for aid, as rescue teams labor through the devastated city.
The death toll jumped from 1,002 within hours, underscores major difficulties in tallying up casualties in the disaster zones. At least 139 were missing with over 3,400 injured in total. Authorities worry that the numbers could be even higher as search and rescue missions are ongoing.
International assistance has begun to pour in. India has launched a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) team at the, under the Operation Brahma. The Indian Army’s 50 (I) Para Brigade in Mandalay has operationalized operations to extend medical and logistical support. China, Thailand and Singapore have also despatched rescue teams and emergency relief.
In Thailand neighboring country, 17 people was killed and 83 people are still missing, mostly from a 30-story collapse in construction building in Bankok. More than 30 people were injured in the calamity.
With that Myanmar’s anti coup forces declare a partial truce for aid efforts indicating the severity of the crisis. As international aid flows in, efforts are still focused on saving lives and rebuilding communities that have been devastated.
