Delta Plane Flips on Landing at Toronto Airport; All 80 Onboard Survive

Delta Air Lines flight carrying 76 passengers and 4 crew members crashes upon landing at Pearson International Airport Monday, February 17 in blizzard conditions. Miraculously, all on board were uninjured, 18 passengers, however, were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR, operated by Delta’s regional carrier Endeavor Air, was arriving from Minneapolis at the time of the incident at approximately 2:15 p.m. ET. Witnesses said the plane landed into strong crosswinds and heavy snow with gusts reaching 40 mph (65 kph). Video showed the plane showing upside down, unrepaired body, when the passengers were evacuating and the emergency service is extinguishing the flames.

The airport CEO Deborah Flint responded with relief adding “We are very grateful every life was saved and only minor injuries were sustained.” Fire chief Todd Aitken confirmed 18 passengers were sent to hospital, including a pediatric patient evacuated to Toronto’s SickKids Hospital.

The Transportation Safe board of Canada has started investigating, The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board tipping in. Aviation specialists, including former pilot John Cox, said that such events are extremely rare and highlighted the CRJ-900’s good reliability in bad weather.

Flight operations at Pearson returned to normal by 5 p.m., and Delta CEO Ed Bastian praised those who were caught in the storm. The incidents push the number of major aviation mishaps in North America to 4 in a month, number one in concerns of regional flight safety.
